What is involved in becoming a chartered tax professional

Whether you are a lawyer or an accountant, you need a certificate from the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) to practice taxation in the country. With this certificate you can practice taxation in Nigeria. A CITN member can serve as an agent for the various tax authorities and file for taxes on their behalf. Therefore, you can form a business out of it. 

To become a chartered tax professional you must have a minimum of bachelor degree in any discipline or its equivalent. A degree certificate in accounting gives you an edge over others. With it, you will be requested to write the professional level of the certificate. In this case, you will pay for registration fees and write the exams. Only those who passed the exam are qualified to be badge as chartered tax practitioners.

If you have an Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN) certificate known as ACA (Associate Chartered Accountant) you can earn the tax certificate without writing an exam. All you need to do is to register, pay for exemptions, and the induction money of 300,000 Naira (price may change). And you have to wait for one year after your ACA induction with ICAN.

How to register and become a member of CITN with ACA

The first action to undergo is to register as a student to get your username and password. The registration will cost N12,000 Naira according to ICAN online tutors. Next, you visit the direct membership link to complete the registration for the direct membership. Make sure you follow all necessary processes as required by CITN. You may also need to contact a member of the profession for a referer signature.

You may also pay a sum of 104,000 Naira for exemption fee and 300,000 Naira for induction fee. This must be done on the period set by the institution.
